Inspired by the remnants of a Roman fort on Honister Pass, this design explores the traces of history embedded within the landscape. It is said people have heard echoes of the clanging of armour and the marching footsteps of soldiers across Honister pass. Viewed from above, the fort's relics reveal geometric outlines where its defensive walls once stood, subtly etched into the terrain and shaped by centuries of change.
Drawing on these forms, the design combines illustrations of a Roman soldier with native Lake District flora in autumn, layered with geometric shapes within each drawing, inspired by the structure of the ancient site. Created using coloured pencil and digitally refined through CAD processes, the pattern balances intricate detail with strong architectural composition. Designed for wallcoverings and soft furnishings, the piece reveals increasing depth and complexity the closer it is viewed, blending history, landscape and craftsmanship into a richly detailed luxury pattern.
