Inspired by the legend of Long Meg and Her Daughters, this design draws on one of Cumbria’s most enduring pieces of folklore. The Neolithic stone circle is said to tell the story of a witch, Long Meg, and her daughters, who were turned to stone by a wizard after dancing on the Sabbath. Standing against the landscape for centuries, the stones continue to hold an atmosphere of mystery and myth.
The design began as a hand-drawn interpretation of the circle, with Long Meg positioned at the centre and symbolic forms surrounding her to represent her daughters. The illustration was then digitally layered and transformed into a repeating pattern, with interlocking sections creating a criss-cross composition that echoes the connection, movement and ritual at the heart of the story. Created for wallcoverings and soft furnishings, the design brings together folklore, landscape and pattern in a contemporary retelling of this ancient legend.
